Coffee & Cacao
SQUARE DEAL
coffee and cacao sourcing project
The idea of SQUARE DEAL emerged in 2015. Each side of the square in our logo represents a partner in the DEAL:
the Environment, the Farmer, the Roaster, and the Consumer.
Our location in Mexico City and Sao Paulo puts us just a motorcycle ride away from the farms we partner with. Through volunteer work and collaboration, we’ve built close relationships with growers all around the country.
Our goal is to highlight the distinctive attributes of each unique farm, celebrating each location and its products.
Transparency is our mission and at the forefront of everything we do. There will always be a SQUARE DEAL.

I travel by motorcycle multiple times during the year visiting farms and collecting samples. These trips give us many advantages. Traveling by motorcycle I can change route easily to connect with small coffee farmers and find new growing regions. I always travel with a tent and sleeping bag to make it easy for me to visit and volunteer on the farms without being a burden on the farmers. This way I am able to spend more time with the producers and get more familiar with the living situation at the farm.

Roasted and packaged at Origin
We buy the coffee directly from small farms, arrange shipping to Mexico City, roast and package at our roastery in Mexico City and then ship the coffee to family in California and send out the orders. We send roasted coffee monthly in order to never sell coffee more than a month off of roast date. Usually about 10% of the retail price of coffee contributes to the economy of the producing country. Our business model contributes more than 50% of retail price to the economy in the producing country.

Small family farms
Because of our location at Origin we have the flexibility to buy small micro lots. Some of the farmers we work with produce less than 500 kilos a year. The farms we work with are focused on agroforestry, and regenerative agricultural practices. We have also found that they pay more attention to the details in the post harvest practices. You can count on sustainability, artisan quality, and directly improving the economy of low income families with your purchase.
